It's a kids' fad for kids. And thankfully one that is inexpensive. Why would an adult be bothered by this?

Guessing you needs kids to know what they are, as I've never heard of them and haven't a scoobie what they do.

They were originally intended (along with fidget cubes) as a development toy for kids on the autism spectrum. Sort of propellor-shaped bit of plastic with a low-frictionmetal axle that spins in a very pleasing way.
Now YouTube is full of tricks one can do with them.

My eldest is autistic and his fidget spinner is just the latest in a long line of fidget toys. It works as well, he seems to be mesmerised by it.

I like them.... quite relaxing... but I imagine very annoying if you are sitting with someone doing that all day long

Am I right in saying that the majority of the tricks involve throwing the fidget spinner to yourself and successfully catching it?
It's hardly a yo-yo or a hacky sack is it.

The current 6 month fad. Like Loom bands were a couple of years ago. My 10 year loves girl loves it.
Just wish I could come up with it! 6 months and you're set up for life...
Any ideas?

Re: Fidget Spinners

Of course they are utterly pointless. Obviously a marketing ploy from bearing manufacturers (hint: the outer three bearings add nothing other than weight and aesthetic, no need for precision components at all)
But I recently spent a very pleasurable weekend making a pair of them with my kids, using some old skateboard/scooter bearings and some materials and tools found in my shed. They turned out great, they loved them and along the way learned quite a lot about mechanics, drawing, planning, using tools, patience, etc. etc.
Time well spent.

Dad, can't we just buy one from Argos?
No son, they have superfluous bearings WHICH I WILL NOT STAND FOR. Now get back to your technical drawings.
